How to draw advanced expressions

Let's start by drawing a face. Construct a set of building blocks using basic shapes, and use this as a guide to draw the outline of your face. Add the eyes and brows.

Add the pupils and then draw a small lightning bolt for the nose. Draw in some nostrils and the mouth, then flesh out the lips around the mouth. Add a shadow underneath the jaw.

Now we're going to tweak and change the shape and positioning of the eyebrows, eyes and mouth to create different facial expressions.

To make your face look cross or angry, angle the eyebrows down on your face. To make the expression happy, curve the bottom line of the eyes up a little and add flicks at the edge of the mouth. For smiling, similar to the happy face, but the mouth is wider and open.

The following expressions can be created using the same straight-on face as before, but tilting the head can really add drama...

To tilt the head down, have your eye-line curve downwards, place the eyes lower down, the ears up and narrow the chin. To tilt the head up, have your eye-line curve upwards, place the eyes higher up, the ears lower down and narrow the top of the head.

For an angry expression, angle the eyebrows and add an open mouth curving downwards. For shocked/scared, draw your eyebrows curved up and an open mouth curving upwards. For shouting, start with the angry face and then stretch the jaw and open the mouth wider showing the tongue.
